This car was raced by J.P. Gouhier in 1989/1990.
Lap time at Donington long circuit was 1 min 42 secs in 1989.
We purchased the car and a comprehensive spares package in 1998 from Renault Chartres Competition with a view to racing the car in the BARC Sports & Saloons series. We tested the car at Mallory Park, managing a 50 sec lap time and then at Donington where we experienced a problem with the front hub/brake assembly. This problem halted the test. We fixed this by having some special hub parts made.
For a variety of reasons we decided not to race the car but to use it for displays and shows. In late 1999 the car went to Belgium and was in a Showroom, then the car returned to us in January 2002.
The car has had an eventful 2005! Firstly, exhibited at the French Car Show in May 2005 at Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground on the 'Renault 21 Turbo Owners Club' stand.
It was then arranged with the Renault Heritage Collection (France) for the car to be involved in the ‘Renault Heritage Procession’ at the Renault World Series event at Donington Park 10/11 September 2005. Tony Hart was driving the 21 along with 2 Le-Mans 24 Hours Alpine, F1 RS01 and 5 Maxi Turbo – drivers Jean-Pierre Jaussaud, Jean Ragnotti and René Arnoux.
The car was taken for a photoshoot at Brungtingthorpe Proving Ground for 'Retro' magazine and given front cover in the December 2005 (Issue 30). Following the shoot it was exhibited on the Retro magazine stand, 4th - 6th November 2005 at the Classic Car Show at the NEC, Birmingham.
The car was taken to Mallory Park in Leicestershire on a photoshoot for Performance GTi magazine the week after the Classic Car Show. This magazine feature is in the January / February 2006 issue of Performance GTi.
After the World Series event, we were contacted by Renault with a view to the car joining the collection in France. They were pleased that the car was still in full racing condition, in the original livery and so very similar to when it was first raced!
Did you know there is a miniature replica of this exact car available from Renault? (The car was awarded the number 2 after its fantastic championship results - the original number was 24).
